Announcing the First Ever

Worst Weeds Contest

It's been a challenging year for gardeners here in the Northeast. A wet, cold spring prevented some of us from completing garden cleanup and mulching on time. This was followed by hot weather and just enough rain to keep the weeds growing like ... well, weeds!

WorstWeeds

Numerous folks have bemoaned the trouble they've had controlling weeds in their gardens this year and we've had our struggles with them here at the Farm as well. Being optimistic folks, we've decided to follow the old adage, "When life gives you lemons, make lemonade!"

Here are the rules:

  • Entrants will submit digital photos of weeds growing in their gardens by 8/31/2011.
  • The entry deemed to have the worst weeds will win a $25 gift certificate from Hummingbird Farm. And a Worst Weeds Winner Certificate. And, of course, bragging rights!
  • The winner will be selected by Brian and Cindy and their decision is final.
  • Selection criteria will be arbitrary, opinionated and probably quite random, like almost everything else around here.
  • Hummingbird Farm reserves the right to use submitted photos on their web site or Facebook page or in their newsletter. We may even make a collage of them. However, the identity of the Guilty Gardeners will be kept hush-hush. Unless of course, you want folks to know that's your garden.....
  • Photos must be taken in YOUR own garden. No fair picking on the neighbors!
  • Photos must show a recognizable garden. Fields of goldenrod, ditches growing sumac or grass and poison ivy on the edge of the woods don't count.
  • Photos must be taken during 2011. Yes, you're on the honor system here.
  • Photos may be submitted via email or posted directly to our Facebook page.
  • Know someone with a Worst Weeds problem greater than yours? Encourage them to enter!
