    Tips for Perfect Pairings

Tip 1: If you are planting clematis close enough that their tops will mingle together, it is very important that you choose plants from the same pruning group. If you plant a Full Prune clematis close to a Don't Bother clematis, trimming the former will be a tremendously challenging job!

Vancouver Danielle and Vancouver Sea Breeze: A Great Matchup!

Here are two Don't Bother pruning varieties that complement each other in many ways, as well as looking great together. These Canadian-bred varieties make a great combo. Not only are they the same pruning group, but they bloom at the same time and are about the same size: 6 to 8 feet tall at maturity. The colors go well together - and don't you just love those ruffles??

Tip 2: Choose varieties that are roughly the same size at maturity. This avoids the problem of the larger clematis swamping the smaller variety. If you are planting some of the really large clematis, please be sure to leave lots of room between them - 3 to 4 feet between the largest cultivars. Crowding clematis plants is never a good thing - this is the voice of experience speaking!

Betty Corning and Etiole Violette: A BIG combo!

There are very few clematis that I recommend coupling with the enormous Betty Corning, but Etoile Violette is big enough to hold her own! These two large plants are not only the same pruning group and about the same size, but they also have very long bloom seasons. They often flower for two months or more in Maine's temperate climate.

Tip 3: Clematis flowers come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. Blending different flower styles adds lots of texture to the garden. Start with a stereotypical clematis with flat, open flowers and add in something different, like a bell-shaped bloom or one with small, narrow petals.

Warsaw Nike and Rubromarginata: What a Great Couple!

This is a combo with lots of interesting things happening. First, they are both Full Prune, about the same size and bloom in mid-summer. Then add in these special attributes:

    • Warsaw Nike's color shifts as the sunlight changes
    • Rubromarginata's flowers actually sparkle in the sun
    • Rubromarginata is fragrant - a very rare quality in clematis
